How Much Wire Will You Need with your Dog Containment Fence?

To help you determine the length and type of wire that you will need for your containment fence area, we have provided useful and helpful information to avoid unwanted or excess wire purchases. Please refer to the table below.

Please remember that All Innotek® and PetSafe containment systems come standard with 500 feet of 20 gauge containment fence wire. As for the larger yards, this boundary kit includes everything you need to fullfil the coverage. All kits include 500 feet of 20 gauge wire, 50 marker flags and two wire splices.

Use Only Burial Approved Containment Fence Wire

Keep in mind that the type or wire you use is Important. There is no real difference in the life span of the gauged wire that you use. But if you intend on burying your wire, it is imperative that you make sure that wire is "Burial Approved". Burial aproved wiring is a long lasting waterproof, polyurethane coated wire, with a solid copper core.

Should I Use 18-gauge or 20-gauge wire?

Most containment fence manufacturers recommend using the standard 20 guage wiring with their units. We ship all of our containment fences with the Premium, Heavy Duty, 20 gauge wire. If you do not want that specific gauge, we offer a Wire Upgrade option, which can be purchased with any containment fence. Some fences we have however, come with the wire upgrade at no additional cost to you. Remember, 18 gauge wire cannot be purchased from your local pet store or pet supply catalog.

Use 20-Gauge if:
» Smooth, loose soil or clay
» You are laying your wire next to a fence
» Your yard has few trees or vegetation.

Use 18-Gauge if:
» Rocky terrain
» Above ground installation
» Your yard has many trees
